It's not about being "Green" it's about staying alive!

Many of you have written me recently in response to my short excerpt about how Joe and I have made the move to organic produce and most importantly grassfed meats. There were several discussions between the two of us, lots of research, and two videos that led to this new life choice. If you have not seen Robyn's video  http://www.robynobrien.com/ please go watch it. Its only 15 minutes long and it really will change your life. This is not a "People shouldn't be mean to animals" kind of video, its a cold hard facts about how we as a culture have let scientists and genetically modified crap ruin our food supply. If that video sparks a fire in your heart, then I encourage you to set aside some time after work, or after kiddos are in bed and watch Food Inc; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVFKEWL6DVU free of charge on youtube!!!

So the major question I keep getting asked is..... "How do you budget it?" to make this really easy I thought I would write one long blog about how we have justified this new life direction. Is it more expensive? Yes, however, in my mind this cost is an investment in our life. It is an investment against cancer, against obesity, against putting pesticides into my daughters digestive system, and against e-coli poisoning.  This cost though when you break it down to dollars and cents is about 1.00 a week more on eggs. 2.00 more a week on yogurt. and about 1.50 more per pound on ground beef.

"Me and My Chiquita Banana ready to go Organic Shopping"

Now, everyone knows I am a deal finder and I love a good bargain. As a military wife I know that "dough" has to be stretched till pay day! So here is my tips and secrets to living organically. Do all fruits and veggies need to be organic? No, the major items you need to stay away from are Corn, Soybeans, Lettuce, Spinach, and Beets. I prefer organic tomatoes because I don't like the idea of regular tomatoes being ripened with ethanol gas, instead of on God's time table. I buy Veggie Wash for all my fruits and veggies but the non-organic ones especially because the pesticide they are sprayed with is water resistant (makes sense right? Otherwise it would wash off everytime the farmers water) so washing them off in the sink alone doesn't really clean them. A great way to make organic produce fit into your budget is only buy the fruits and veggies on sale that week. Sun Harvest (Now Sprouts) has a webpage http://www.sun-harvest.com/ you can look up whats on sale each week before you go. I print it out and circle the items I want and use that as my grocery list. If you shop on Wednesdays, this weeks, and last weeks deals are in effect. They call it Double Deal Wednesdays. Wednesdays are also the day that they do lots of their tastings and give out free samples. This week for example; blueberries are 88 cents a bushel, strawberries are 2 bushels for 3.00, tomatoes are 2 pounds for 1.00, and peaches are 47 cents a pound. I got 3 heads of organic romaine lettuce for 1.99. If you don't have a Spouts or a Sun Harvest near you google Whole Foods, or Trader Joes for similar selections of organic foods.

Now, lets get to the meat of it. Although there is some wiggle room in the fruit and veggie selection.... meat is one thing we have decided has to be grassfed, non-genetically altered, hormone and antibiotic free. If your budget allows the cheapest way to accomplish this change in your meat supply is to buy a half or a quarter of an animal at a time! This requires quite a bit of freezer space so a chest freezer is not a bad idea. http://www.eatwild.com/products/index.html at this site you can search for grassfed farm animal distributors near you. I found some great deals in Arizona, and New Mexico. Most places ship free if you buy 75.00 or more. Sun Harvests weekly prices on meat vary, but today I got 2 spinach and feta stuffed pork chops for 4.50, and I got one pound of hand rolled pork maple sausage, and one pound of hand rolled chicken cheddar jalapeño sausage for 2.49 a piece. The organic meat is going to be more expensive hands down. Corn is subsidized by the government and sold at half the cost it actually takes to grow it.... so its cheaper to feed your animals corn than it is to provide grazing grasses. Organic farmers have to pay fee's to be "certified" organic, fee's to market and label items as organic, and they do not get the tax breaks or government funded marketing programs their subsidized non-organic competitors get. So its an extra cost we literally have to eat. One way we combat the extra cost, is smaller meat portions. Joe and I do not need a 10oz steak.... a 4-5oz one for each of us coupled with large portions of spinach salad or sautéed snap peas and carrots will fill us up just fine and its better for our waistlines. :-)

My last and final tip is become familiar with the organic food labels. Annies makes pasta's, mac n cheese, and snack crackers. Stonyfield makes organic yogurt and dairy products. Horizon makes super tasty organic milk.Brown Cow also makes delicious organic yogurt, and greek yogurt if you prefer that. Blue Sky makes natural soda's.  Most of those items I have found at Walmart, Albertsons or Target.

As you try to balance your budget and your conscience with all this new information, I hope my tips help! I want you to feel enlightened, and I hope I  answered some of your looming questions, and helped you gain resources to educate yourself on the things we are feeding ourselves and our families. "Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself" - 1 Corinthians 6:19. If we are indeed temples of the living God, then just like in every other part of my life I want to give God my best! This includes filling it with food that is good for us as a family and a body of Christ. Happy food hunting!

The Young & The Wristless

Today has been a very challenging day for me. Teething and a snuggly Roo aside, my wrist is killing me! I am pretty much going to drop my PCM (For the non-military this is the Primary Care Manager, or your normal doctor) and find someone who will help me. This "Ice it and take a tylenol and ibuprofen at the same time" thing is not working. I feel so helpless and actually alot like a cripple. I couldn't pick up the shampoo this morning with my hand. I couldn't grip an onion last night to chop it. After a stroller walk today I couldn't get into the house again..... that turning the key thing gets me every stinkin time. Maybe this is God's way of telling me I do too much?? But with Joe's command looming around the corner and me about to take on the FRG monster I don't see how I can slow down. Wearing my brace is starting to make my wrist hurt more..... I iced it alot the last two nights and I can say with certainty that it is worse today than it was the two before.Ugh!

Let me try to describe the situation so you all can understand more and it sounds less like a rambling complaining woman. If you reach out in front of you with your palm to the floor and grip something.... a cup, a remote... whatever; bend your wrist so that the top of your hand is now facing you and your palm is facing outwards WHILE you are griping ____ object. That, I can not do. I get a sharp stabbing pain in my hand and my wrist locks up and my fingers start to release the item. Now, put your arm out like you are going to karate chop something but only "chop" with your hand and wrist. Again.... can't do this at all! Super sharp pain shoots into my thumb and inner wrist and my wrist chops sideways at an angle trying to compensate. VERY odd to tell your hand to do something and to watch your hand try and fail! The firm grip required to hold a thin key and then the wrist motion of turning the key is why I always drop the keys. I refuse to hold Reagan with my bad wrist, for fear of dropping her, so most other things are done with my bad hand. In the instance of the keys, as I twist my wrist to turn the key, sharp stabbing pain, cramp...... keys hit the ground. If anyone has any advice... I AM ALL EARS!!! Its getting to the point where I am done sucking it up and being tough and more worried about the safety issue of my wrist getting any worse. Being able to tote a tot around all day is kinda part of my job description so I have to have a functioning wrist!

I will keep you all updated on how/when I see a new PCM and what he or she says..... Off to ice my wrist and hope for a better evening.

In the Land of Teething and Nod....

You: So Bailey, how am I sleeping these days???
Me: Funny you should ask, because I have a story! So my sweet snuggle buddy baby has been teething, (I know what else is new, the kids been doing that for 4 months now) but this time its her top teeth. Her first top tooth broke through yesterday afternoon, and for about a week now she has been waking up in the middle of the night, not to nurse... to play! One night it was an entire 3 hours before I got her back to sleep. Last night in addition to her normal 3 nursing times she wanted about 45 minutes of play time, and tried to play peek-a-boo in bed with a sleeping snoring Daddy. It is amazing how sleeping in 2 hour chunks feels normal after a while. But at the same time you never really feel rested. It also greatly affects your dream life.... since I never really get into deep REM sleep, my dreams are some of the wackiest disjunct trains of thought I have ever experienced. I wake up and I have to try and sift through the ramen soup in my brain to remember what was wacky sleep and what actually happened.

Coffee.... my dear friend, here is an ode to you!
Delicious and sweet,
with my organic creamer and stevia,
you are my favorite treat,
I won't let anyone steal ya!

Ha ha ha, ok enough with the corny shenanigans. In all seriousness, the fact that Reagan is ok with Mommy drinking caffeine and eating dairy again is a huge blessing. Due to Reagan's sensitive tummy, for months 1,2,3,4,&5 Dairy and Caffeine were only enjoyed in my wacky dreams. Around month 5 I started throwing dairy items in here and there and when she didn't seem to mind we tried caffeine. By 6 months mommy was back on her regular coffee, 2 cups a morning routine. Sorry de-caf coffee companies your stock just when down. :-)

Today was a very clingy teething day at our house. Don't get me wrong; rain or shine, fussy or smiley, I never take being home with my baby for granted. Also, when Reagan is fussy it is not like she cries 24-7. She is usually just very clingy, wants to snuggle and be held all the time and Mommy is not allowed to be more than 2 feet away from her at any time. Some of you may think I am spoiling her, and you would wrong. I don't think its possible to be too affectionate with your child. Reagan gets probably well over 100 kisses a day. She gets tickled and talked to all the time. She gets playtime on the floor with mommy & daddy. She gets yummy home made organic baby food, and breastmilk on demand. Babies grow too fast, so I am soaking up every second of time with my snuggle buddy.
This was my solution for a baby who wanted to be snuggled all day. She hasn't been in this Moby Wrap since she was bout 3 months old.... but boy was she all smiles when I slipped her in. I love being Reagan's mommy!

First things first....

I owe everyone a huge apology for not updating my blog in like 2 MONTHS! But, as my friends with tots know, free time is hard to come by. Also, my husband is on this new 3 months home 3 months gone rotation with his job.... so I spent most of last month at my parents house. Reason 1, because my silly shihtzus have learned how to jump our 3 foot 7 inch back yard wall. Reason two, I have been suffering horribly from a condition known as "Mom Thumb" (Yes its real, I did not make it up, if I had I would have come up with a much cooler name like " Ta Da you are now crippled syndrome") so my parents were a great help with Reagan on the really bad days when I needed a break.

Weight-loss Update! I am 2 lbs away from pre-Reagan belly bulge. Will that put me at my goal size... no; between a Wedding, a Honeymoon in Hawaii, Christmas, and being snowed in 3 months in Kentucky where every vegetable comes fried I packed on about 12 lbs so I was up 12 before I gained the lovely 50 pounds of Reagan Love. How have I been doing it? Stroller walks have been a big help, but not happening as often as I want because the temps in the southwest have been 110, 111, etc. Another huge help has been our families switch to organic food, grassfed meats, and nothing genetically modified (GMO's). Why did we make this switch? I ran across a video by Robyn O'brien http://www.robynobrien.com/ which shed some serious light on the scary things that we have done as a nation in the "processing" of our food. This led Joe and I on a researching journey and the next stop we made was a movie called "Food Inc.". That movie totally changed our lives. We talked about it alot afterwards and we decided it may be too late to reverse all the effects of hormones, antibiotics and genetically modified pesticides he and I have consumed in our "safe" grocery store bought foods; but it is not too late to do something different and better for our children. Also, if you believe your body is a living temple of God then it only makes sense to fill it with the best things. So, really my focus switched from weightloss to life style cleansing. In the process I actually started shedding pounds without really trying, (THANK YOU JESUS). I have a new found love for organic yogurt, and Kashi is the bomb.PS I dare you all to try and grab an organic milk instead of a generic one at the store next time you are there, or if you have a healthfood store get one dish of organic meat. Your tastebuds will thank you! You will think "Oh yeah this is what real milk is supposed to taste like" or " Wow, this meat is so moist and smooth". No joke, I think this is one of the best decisions we have made since we got married, aside from becoming parents of course.

So along with the new organic food comes new recipes. Anyone interested in me sharing? If so, let me know, and I will post instructions and pics. Also with my exploration of new foods and cooking styles comes another adventure we are about to embark on. Joe is getting his first Company Command. This means lots of crazy work hours for him, and a demanding job in general, but its something he has worked for for a long time so I am very very proud of him!! With that I will be taking over the company wives/girlfriends support group and I am pretty nervous. So any prayers for me in that region I would appreciate. I am not great at Army Wife politics, and I hate having to bite my tongue... but as Joe moves up in his career it has become more apparent to both of us that "Politics" is the name of the game, Lord help me!

Hopefully my next update will be sooner and not later.
For now, I have a date with a hunky hubby, a soft pillow and a bitty baby. G'night Y'all
